A stern reminder of the inevitably of death, the phrase memento mori has been popular since the ancient Greco-Roman period.  The skull is the most common motif used in it's art, jewelry and architecture.  It's no surprise the Georgians and Victorians embraced this philosophy and also used the skull as a reminder to live life to the fullest.  

This pipe is likely from the mid to late Victorian period.  The stem is fashioned out of bone while the cup, we believe, is carved out of white clay.  The artist was truly a master as the skull is very intricately carved with the finest details, almost resembling real bone.  

This pipe makes a great collectors piece for anyone interested in Tobacciana.
