Johnnie Walker Black Label Blade Runner 2049 Director's Cut Limited Edition Blended Scotch Whisky (2017) 70cl

The new expression was created by Johnnie Walker master blender Jim Beveridge with the film’s director, Denis Villeneuve, with one eye on how whiskies of the future might taste.

It is a combination of more than 30 single malts and grain whiskies, blended in Black Label style, but with a smokier twist. Bottled at 49% abv – a nod to 2049, the year in which the new film is set – it is also stronger than the standard Black Label.

Beveridge said: ‘I learned that film-making is much like blending – you have to constantly be committed to creating the best possible outcome.

‘Johnnie Walker blending tradition dates back to 1820 and I’m honoured to carry on the legacy and collective memory of our other past blenders to ensure that the same whisky enjoyed today can be enjoyed responsibly in 2049.’

The original Blade Runner film was set in Los Angeles in the year 2019 and featured lead character Rick Deckard (played by Harrison Ford) drinking Johnnie Walker poured from a futuristic bottle.

Blade Runner 2049 director Denis Villeneuve said: ‘Like many fans, I remember the Johnnie Walker bottle from the first film, so it was a unique privilege to collaborate with Johnnie Walker on designing a totally original, custom bottle for the new movie.’

Set 30 years after the original, Blade Runner 2049 stars Ryan Gosling, with Harrison Ford reprising his role of Deckard. The film premieres on 6 October.

The name of the special edition is a reference to the 1992 re-release of the original film, which featured a significant recut by director Ridley Scott.

One of the most iconic whiskies in the world; Black Label, and it is even more special as it has been bottled for the Blade Runner 2049 movie.

Critic tasting note: "A futuristic bottle design released for Ridley Scott’s replicant sequel set in 2049, hence the punchy bottling strength. Peat smoke, toffee caramels, fresh banana, and sliced red apple. Promising layers of fruit salad, grape, apple, citrus, and apricot are swept aside by an aggressive peppery attack, emerging to notes of bitter fruit, burnt rubber, and smoke.
