Grafted custard apple tree approx 80cms high. Will start to fruit in 1-2 years. Self pollinating so you only need one tree. Grows 5m high but can be kept smaller with regular pruning. The tree is semi deciduous and loses some leaves in winter.
The fruit is very large and irregular in shape with an excellent sweet flavour.
African Pride is a modern selection of the popular Pinks Mammoth variety. Trialled by commercial growers for several years, it has been found to have a lower seed count and excellent natural fruit set. This means that, unlike some other varieties, there is no need to laboriously hand pollinate each bloom to achieve a good harvest.
Unpruned custard apples grow into very large trees. With dedicated, twice yearly pruning it is possible to restrict tree height and spread to 3-4m. However, novice gardeners should think carefully before they plant a custard apple in domestic gardens as these trees require considerable maintenance to keep them to manageable size.
Keeping trees small not only enables easier harvesting of fruit, it also permits netting of trees to exclude possums and parrots that snack on fruit before they reach maturity. Apart from these problems, custard apples are largely pest and disease free and easy to grow.
