Isle of the Dead (RKO, 1945). Fine on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 40.5"). Horror.
Boris Karloff lunges at a frightened Ellen Drew on this frightening one sheet from the Val Lewton produced film. Inspired by the famous Arnold Böcklin painting of the same title, the film centers on a group of travelers on a deserted island who mysteriously begin to die one by one at the hands of "varvoloka," a Greek vampire. This was the first of three collaborations between Karloff and Lewton. 

Isle of the Dead saw Boris Karloff team up with producer Val Lewton for the first of three films (though it was preceded in release by The Body Snatcher, which was filmed second). According to a Los Angeles Times interview, Karloff credited Lewton with saving him from the dregs of the Frankenstein franchise (1944's House of Frankenstein was met with mostly unflattering reviews). Isle of the Dead is set on a remote Greek island during World War I, where a group of survivors from a shipwreck find themselves trapped in an eerie, decaying mansion. As they await rescue, the group descends into paranoia and fear as a mysterious and malevolent force begins to pick them off one by one. Tensions rise as the survivors struggle to maintain their sanity and uncover the truth behind the island's dark secrets. Ultimately, their attempts to escape reveal a deeper, more sinister truth about the island and their own fears.

This gorgeous one sheet has a lurid green tone and superb artwork. A visually striking poster for one of Karloff's stronger features.

Condition: A restored poster with good color and an overall very presentable appearance. Touchup has been applied along the folds as well as within the image and background to address various flaws including fold wear.   Professionally linen backed and looks Amazing!

Artist BIO:  William Rose  (1909-1972)

According to film historians Stephen Rebello and Richard C. Allen, Rose was "one of Hollywood's busiest and best posterists". He was closely identified with RKO Radio Pictures, where he worked in-house for many years. His artwork shaped the "colorful and brash" direction taken by the studio's advertising department. He mostly painted in pastel and watercolor, which were the media typically used in the RKO art department. Aside from RKO, he contributed artwork to Paramount Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM).

Most of his poster work was in the 1930s and 1940s, during the Classic Hollywood era and the peak of the studio system. At that time, most poster artists worked for studio art departments and, as a result, most of these artists' individual contributions went unrecognized; many iconic posters of the period are considered anonymous works. Rose is considered one of the rare poster artists of the period whose individual style has achieved recognition, alongside others like Al Hirschfeld, Alberto Vargas, and Reynold Brown.   In 2003, the American Film Institute ranked his alternate poster for Citizen Kane (1941) at no. 36 on its "100 Years... 100 American Movie Poster Classics" list.
