Asparagus is the earliest of spring vegetables, nothing beats the taste of freshly cut asparagus straight from the garden. It’s highly nutritious too. Plant in a separate bed, where they can be left to grow for 20 years, and dig in lots of organic matter as they should not be disturbed once established.
This herbaceous perennial produces rich, delicious crisp asparagus spears. Excellent for stir-fries and salads.
Prepare the ground by digging in a general purpose fertiliser and lots. of organic matter. Plant the crowns 15cm deep and 40cm, apart, but cover with just 5cm of soil:
As the fern grows fill the depression above the crown with more soil but do not cover the new shoots. Water and fertilise regularly as the fern grows. Cut down the dry, yellow fern in Winter. Do not harvest spears until the third year from planting. Harvest half the spears as they are produced and leave the rest to ensure the plant remains strong and productive for the next season.
Water regularly
