Buchanan’s is one of the most famous names in Scotch Whisky. James Buchanan founded James Buchanan & Co. in 1884 and immediately set about to assemble Scottish Spirits and craft his first blends. He hit a spot of luck the year after, winning the contract to supply the House of Commons — the British Parliament — as the official supplier of Whisky. Well, politicians are people too, just like everybody else in the world, politicians like to drink too. His business took off from there. Today, Buchanan’s is a division of industry giant Diageo, and produces a wide variety of blends that are recognized as icons of Scotch world-wide, and are some of the most popular brands in South America.

Buchanan's 18YO Special Reserve sits at the top of Buchanan’s core line up. It is a blend of grain and Single Malts that are married and then aged exclusively in ex-Sherry casks for a full eighteen years. If you have not yet tasted this fine dram, perhaps the best way to imagine it is as a cross between Johnnie Walker Green and The Macallan 12. The flavors are rich — almost decadent really — and bold from the first sip.

Smartass corner: 
James Buchanan was also in the horse business — trading horses raised in Central and South America extensively. He used his contacts to start marketing his Whiskies there, where they quickly became very popular. Those regions remain major markets for Buchanan’s to this very day.
